Cyclamen graecum

by Alisdair Aird

For the full text of this article see The Mediterranean Garden No 63, January 2011

Massive tuber of ancient plant, its light colour visible against the
darker earth, exposed by road widening.

Cyclamen graecum often grows among rock piles.

Sometimes ants drop seeds of this species into deep rock crevices,
where the plants eventually grow - as if the rock itself is flowering.

In ancient olive terraces cyclamen often live
close to the trunks, where the trees' roots have
protected them from surface cultivations

The brilliant flowers of Cyclamen graecum are one of autumn's most welcome signs.
