Notes from Behind the Firehose

The fires in southern Portugal in 2003 devastated nearly 12,000 hectares of land, including the 3-hectare plot belonging to Peter Eaton. After 400 dead trees had been felled, Peter watched as his remaining Cork oaks (Quercus suber), Arbutus unedo, olives and Eucalyptus globulus sprang back to life while seeds of the latter, adapted to the bush fires in their native Australia, germinated freely and Cistus (C. crispus and C. populifolius) started recolonisation.
