Italian Gardens of the Hesperides: Citrus Fruit in Tuscanyby Paul Whitehouse The Italian Branch of the MGS devoted a day in September to visiting a nursery specialising in the cultivation of citrus trees and gardens, large and small, where citrus are grown. The mild microclimate allows a wide variety of citrus fruits, including the variegated lemon pictured, to flourish. The methods of cultivation are of interest. Trees are grown in the ground, in pots and espaliered, sometimes up very high walls. (We saw the same types of espaliers in the patio gardens during the AGM in Andalucia, Spain.)
